Bacteriostatic water from Onyx Research is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. It’s the standard diluent for reconstituting freeze-dried peptides, and we sell it in 10mL, 20mL and 30mL vials. It’s sold for laboratory research only.

The benzyl alcohol is what makes it bacteriostatic. It holds back bacterial growth after the stopper has been pierced, so one vial can be drawn from many times. Plain sterile water has no preservative and is meant for a single draw.

Why labs mix peptides with Bacteriostatic water

Most freeze-dried peptides dissolve readily in it, and the preservative gives a mixed vial a usable life of weeks in the fridge instead of hours. It’s neutral enough that it doesn’t change most peptides’ structure.

A few compounds are exceptions. Peptides that won’t dissolve at neutral pH may need a dilute acid, and some protocols call for plain sterile water. The reconstitution charts on our research peptides pages assume this diluent.

Choosing a size

The 10mL vial covers a handful of reconstitutions and costs $14.50. The 20mL vial costs $21.00, and the 30mL vial at $29.50 suits labs that mix several vials a month. Pick a size from the option menu.

As a rough guide, most 5mg and 10mg peptide vials take 1 to 3mL each. A 10mL vial mixes three to ten of them, and a 30mL vial covers a long study.

Bacteriostatic water or sterile water?

Sterile water for injection is just purified water in a sealed container. It has no preservative, so once the stopper is pierced it should be used straight away and the rest thrown out. That suits a single reconstitution and not much else.

Bacteriostatic water carries the same purified water plus 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The preservative slows bacterial growth, which lets one vial serve several peptide vials over a few weeks. For most research peptides it’s the default, and it’s what the mixing charts on our product pages use.

Some protocols name a different diluent, such as sterile saline or dilute acetic acid for peptides that resist dissolving. If a paper or protocol you’re following names one, use that. Otherwise Bacteriostatic water is the safe choice.

How to draw from the vial

• Wipe the stopper with an alcohol swab and let it dry.
• Use a new sterile needle and syringe for every draw.
• Draw the volume you need, then let it run slowly down the inside wall of the peptide vial.
• Write the date of the first puncture on the label.

The general rule for multi-dose vials is to discard them 28 days after the first puncture unless the maker says otherwise, and to throw a vial out sooner if the liquid turns cloudy or something floats in it.

Storage

Keep unopened vials at room temperature, out of direct light. After the first puncture, many labs move the vial to the fridge to be safe. Either way, track the 28-day window.
